Surgery History

The history of Gordon Street Surgery can be traced back to 1890 when Dr William Clements set up a practice in Derby Street. He moved to 6 St Pauls Square in 1892 and was succeeded by his son, Leitrim, in 1916. His grandson, Basil, continued the family tradition of medicine, joining the practice in 1950. In 1954 Dr Malcolm Adams joined the practice, and in 1969 Dr William Lathbury brought another old established Burton practice – The White House – into the fold when Byrkley Street Surgery opened. Dr Hamid Khan joined the practice in 1977, and in the 1980s the three senior partners retired one by one, being replaced in turn by Drs Stephen Collier, Philip Robinson, Christopher Gunstone and Eileen Gunstone (the discrepancy in numbers occurred as the practice was allowed an extra partner). In spite of retiring twice, Dr Basil continued to work with the practice after it moved to Gordon Street in 1989, and worked right up to his untimely death in 1992. The five current doctors were joined by Dr Catherine Lobb as a part-time assistant. In 1996 Drs Eileen and Chris Gunstone became part-time and Dr Brendan O’Reilly joined the practice as a new full-time partner. Dr Lobb left in 2003 for a more full time position in Tamworth. We became a training practice in 2002.
